Brushing

Brushing within half an hour of eating or drinking certain foods can actually damage enamel. So be sure to wait an hour before brushing after eating.

Toothpicks

Some scientists believe that humans were using toothpicks 1.8 million years ago. Curved grooves found on many ancient teeth are said to indicate that they used grass stalks to clean between their teeth.

Cotton Candy

Cotton candy was co-invented by a dentist. Before it was cotton candy, it was called “Fairy Floss.”

Tooth Fairy

The average amount of money left by the Tooth Fairy in 1900 was 12 cents. According to a recent survey in January 2019, the average payout for a tooth from the Tooth Fairy is around $4.00 for children who are 6-12 years old. The price per tooth has gone down by about 50 cents since last year. Most parents answered by saying they gave $20.00 for the first tooth to celebrate the milestone and after that, each tooth was priced between $4.00 to $5.00.

Tooth Tip

Hurry and get a baggy! A tooth that gets knocked out starts to die within 15 minutes. If you place it in a baggy with milk, it will survive much longer while you get to the dentist.

Implants

Study Club

Advanced Implants & Periodontics had another wonderful study club meeting last Thursday evening at the Holly Hills Country Club. The club was happy to welcome Dr. Steven Liu, who presented his lecture on Esthetic Implant Dentistry. We were pleased with the excellent turnout and want to thank our referring doctors for attending the meeting and their continued support. Special thanks to Dr. Liu for a very informative lecture.

Frederick County Dental Society Meeting

The Frederick County Dental Society once again had a wonderful meeting with a great turnout last evening at the Holly Hills Country Club. Dr. Arthur Jee and Dr. Louis Depaola delivered an engaging lecture reviewing the Maryland State Dental Board. Current president Dr. Melanie Towe was honored to present a plaque to Dr. Dave Detterline in recognition and appreciation of his outstanding service as the society’s immediate past president. One very exciting update; FCDS is now recognized by the Academy of General Dentistry as a PACE Program provider. The PACE program is based on 13 rigorous standards for identifying high-quality educational organizations. This was made possible through our Executive Director Kristen Virts’ careful planning and execution. The next FCDS meeting is scheduled for March 10th, 2020 at the Dutch’s Daughter restaurant. This will be a Maryland State Dental Association visitation meeting and Dr. Grill will be presenting a lecture on temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain. Please save the date!

Happy Halloween

It’s that time of the year where kids will be eating more candy! Try to avoid sticky candies that cling to your teeth. The stickier candies, like taffy and gummy bears, take longer to be washed away by saliva, increasing the risk for tooth decay.

Bad Breath

Bad breath is not just caused by the food you eat – it can also be an indicator of your gum health. Food residue between teeth leads to bacterial growth, which in turn can cause bad breath. In the early stages of gum disease, bacteria begins to grow between the teeth and the gums, forming infected pockets that contribute to your breath.

Toothbrush Head

How often should you change your toothbrush or electric toothbrush head? Many dentists recommend changing them every 3 to 4 months. A new toothbrush can remove more plaque than one that’s worn out. It’s also recommended to change your toothbrush after you’ve been sick to eliminate any bacteria from being transferred.
