Scaling and Root Planing
Research shows the most predictable method of treating early to moderate periodontal disease is by scaling and root planning together with good homecare. Most patients are familiar with these procedures when they go to their dentist for a cleaning of their teeth.
Dr. Towe performs the procedure under local anesthetic to minimize discomfort. Specialized instruments are used to access below the gum tissue to remove bacterial plaque and calculus (tartar). In certain cases, antimicrobial microspheres are placed in areas of infection or deeper pockets. It has been found to make the procedure more effective.
An oral antibiotic pill can also be prescribed to increase effectiveness of this procedure. The medication increases the resistance of the gums to bacterial breakdown.
